Nord Young? The Who, the What, and the Why: A Brief Introduction

"Some careers are chosen. Mine was shaped by the sea, by the contracts signed before cargo leaves port, the disputes that arise when it doesn't arrive as planned, and the infrastructure of global trade that most people never think about until something goes wrong."

Where This Comes From

My name is Richard Young, and I've spent the better part of my career working inside the maritime industry. Not from the shore, but deep in the operational and legal machinery that keeps international shipping moving. As Claims and Contracts Compliance Officer for a major international breakbulk vessel carrier, I've spent years working across cargo claims, charter parties, demurrage disputes, sanctions compliance, and arbitration. That work has taken me across time zones, across jurisdictions, and more than once, across continents.

International travel has been a thread running through my life ever since. Having visited over ten countries and traveled internationally multiple times each year, I've come to understand trade not just as a legal or financial abstraction, but as something genuinely human, a network of relationships, risks, and decisions that connect people and economies around the world. That perspective shapes everything I do at Nord Young.

"The clients I want to work with aren't looking for a form-filler. They need someone who has read the charter parties, sat with the disputes, and understands what's actually at stake."

I'm also currently completing an MBA with a specialization in Supply Chain Management, which continues to deepen how I think about risk, logistics, and the commercial ecosystems that Nord Young is built to serve. The work never stops, and that's by design.

What Nord Young Does

Nord Young is a B2B insurance brokerage and energy solutions firm built specifically for businesses operating in complex, high-exposure environments. We work at the intersection of risk management and commercial operations, two areas that are too often siloed when they should be integrated. Our focus is on two core service pillars:

(1) Coverage solutions tailored to the realities of international cargo, breakbulk operations, vessel liability, and maritime trade risk. We understand the exposure because we've handled the claims.

(2) Broad commercial insurance brokerage for businesses that need a knowledgeable partner, not just a policy. We assess risk the way underwriters do, and advocate for our clients accordingly.

Beyond insurance, Nord Young also operates in the energy space, providing bunker and oil brokering services, maritime claims consulting, and sanctions compliance for carriers, charterers, and trading companies that need experienced, independent guidance.

Who We're Here For

Nord Young exists for businesses that operate in environments where the stakes are real and the details matter. Shipping companies, cargo owners, energy traders, freight operators, and commercial enterprises with complex risk profiles — these are the clients we're built to serve.

We're not a volume brokerage. We don't move policies in bulk and call it service. Every client engagement at Nord Young is informed by genuine industry expertise, legal and contractual fluency, and a commitment to understanding your operation before we recommend anything.

If you've ever felt underserved by brokers who didn't speak your language, who didn't know what a charter party was, or couldn't explain your demurrage exposure, or handed you a generic commercial package that missed your actual risk profile, Nord Young was built as an answer to exactly that experience.

What Comes Next

Nord Young will double as a space for industry perspective, risk insights, and honest conversation about the commercial and maritime landscape. I'll write about topics that matter to our clients: coverage gaps in marine policies, trends in global energy markets, how sanctions regimes affect shipping operations, and more. No filler, no fluff, just informed commentary from someone actively working in the field. Subscribe to the newsletter and stay up-to-date.

Nord Young is licensed, operational, and ready to work. If your business carries risk, and every business does, let's talk about how to carry it better.
