Nord Young? The Who, the What, and the Why: A Brief Introduction

"Some careers are chosen. Mine was shaped by the sea, by the contracts signed before cargo leaves port, the disputes that arise when it doesn't arrive as planned, and the infrastructure of global trade that most people never think about until something goes wrong."
Where This Comes From
My name is Richard Young, and I've spent the better part of my career working inside the maritime industry. Not from the shore, not at sea, but deep in the operational and legal machinery that keeps international shipping moving. As Claims and Contracts Compliance Officer for one of the largest international breakbulk carriers, I've spent years working across cargo claims, charter party and demurrage disputes, sanctions and regulatory compliance, and London Maritime Arbitration. That work has taken me across time zones, across jurisdictions, and more than once, across continents.
International travel has been a thread running through my life since I stumbled into this industry. Having visited over a dozen countries and traveling internationally multiple times each year, I've come to understand maritime trade not just as a legal or financial abstraction, but as something genuinely human, a network of relationships, risks, and decisions that connect people and economies around the world. That perspective shapes everything we do at Nord Young.
"The clients we want to work with aren't looking for a form-filler. They need someone who has read the charter parties, sat with the disputes, and understands what's actually at stake."
I'm currently completing an MBA with a specialization in Supply Chain Management, which continues to deepen how I think about risk, logistics, and the commercial ecosystems that Nord Young is built to serve. The work never stops, and that's by design.
What Nord Young Does
Nord Young is a B2B insurance, bunker, and claims and compliance brokerage, working in maritime risk and global energy solutions. The firm was built specifically for businesses operating in complex, high-exposure environments. Those businesses need insurance that meets them where they are rather than forcing them into a standard form, fuel purchasing that works on their terms, and claims and compliance support that keeps daily operations moving. We work at the intersection of risk management and commercial operations, across three core service pillars:
(1) Insurance Coverage Solutions tailored to the realities of international cargo, breakbulk and port operations, vessel liability, and maritime trade risk. We understand the exposure because we've handled the claims.
(2) Energy Brokering covering carriers' and charterers' bunker needs. We work as a broker rather than a trader, which means no credit exposure and no margin hidden in your price, and we are building a screened supplier network to give clients competitive access without the counterparty risk of buying through an intermediary who holds title.
(3) Claims & Compliance assistance beyond your everyday brokerage. We'll manage your claims alongside your carrier's claims team and are ready to assist with sanctions checks and global compliance for your international business needs.
Who We're Here For
Nord Young exists for businesses that operate in environments where the stakes are real and the details matter. Shipping companies, cargo owners, energy traders, freight operators, port operators, and commercial enterprises with complex risk profiles. These are the clients we're built to serve.
We're not a volume brokerage. We don't move policies in bulk, quote stems without reading whose terms you're buying on, or hand you a claim number and step back. Every client engagement at Nord Young is informed by genuine industry expertise, legal and contractual fluency, and a commitment to understanding your operation before we recommend anything.
If you've ever felt underserved by brokers who didn't speak your language, who didn't know what a charter party was, couldn't explain your demurrage exposure, handed you a generic commercial package that missed your actual risk profile, or quoted you a bunker price without mentioning the time bar buried in the supplier's terms, Nord Young was built as an answer to exactly that experience.
Expertise and Industry Space
Nord Young also serves as a space for industry perspective, risk insights, and honest conversation about the commercial and maritime landscape. We'll write articles about topics that matter to our clients: coverage gaps in marine policies, trends in global energy markets, how sanctions regimes affect shipping operations, and more. No filler, no fluff, just informed commentary from experts actively working in the field. Subscribe to the newsletter and stay up-to-date.
